Event Description

11th Woodcock Symposium
October 25-27, 2017
R.A.M. Conference Center, Roscommon, MI

We are pleased to announce the 11th Woodcock Symposium scheduled for October 25-27, 2017 at the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center in Roscommon, MI. Since the last symposium in 2006, timberdoodle enthusiasts have completed considerable work in Woodcock research, management, and conservation. The time is ripe to gather once again to share what has been accomplished over the past 10 years and to plan for the future of woodcock management. Please join us in October 2017 to rekindle old friendships and to share the latest information about woodcock! Registration materials will be available in early 2017 – Stay tuned! For more information, please contact Al Stewart, MI DNR Upland Game Bird Specialist, at 517-284-6221 or stewarta1@michigan.gov.

The symposium paper sessions will focus on the priorities identified in the 2010 Publication – Priority Information Needs for American Woodcock, A Funding Strategy. The priorities identified in the publication were:

  1. Develop a demographic-based model for assessing American Woodcock population response to harvest and habitat management,
  2. Develop communication strategies to increase support for policies and practices that benefit American woodcock and other wildlife of young forests,
  3. Improve understanding of migration, breeding, and wintering habitat quality for American woodcock, and
  4. Improve the American Woodcock singing-ground survey.

A copy of the full strategy is available at: https://www.fws.gov/birds/surveys-and-data/webless-migratory-game-birds/american-woodcock.php. The editorial team will give primary consideration to submissions covering one of these priorities; however, we welcome the submission of abstracts on other topics that will be included in a general session.

Submission Timeline:

  • December 31, 2016 – Abstract submission deadline
  • January 31, 2017 – Authors notified of acceptance
  • August 31, 2017 – Draft manuscripts for symposium proceedings publication are due. Authors not completing draft manuscript by September 1, 2017 can present at the symposium but presentation will not be published in the proceedings
